History of Chhatarpur
The pioneer of the freedom of Bundelkhand, Bundela Rajput leader Maharaja Chhatrasal was the founder of Chhatarpur city. There is also a memorial of the King in the city. Until the year 1785, many descendants of the Maharaja ruled this place and subsequently, the Ponwar group of the Rajputs took the reins of Chhatarpur. In the year 1806, British Government transferred this state to Kunwar Sone Singh Ponwar. He took the importance of Chhatarpur into the new heights. The Kunwar was succeeded by Maharaja Pratap Singh, Maharaja Jagat Raj and Maharaja Vishwanath. During the reign of Maharaja Vishwanath, Chhatarpur saw its golden period because the policies of the King brought great prosperity and stability at this place. Besides that, this period witnessed the new achievements into the fields of governance, art, literature and culture. After the death of Maharaja Vishwanath, the administration of Chhatarpur was owned by his son Maharaja Bhawani Singh. He carried the same legacy that his father had left. Post-independence in the year 1947, the Rajas of Chhatarpur ceded his kingdom with India and consequently, Chhatarpur was merged into the Indian state of Vindhya Pradesh. Later in the year 1956, Vindhya Pradesh was amalgamated into the state of Madhya Pradesh.Geography of Chhatarpur
